The Louisiana High School Athletic Association has decided to make a change to next week’s state baseball schedule that will benefit the Lake Area’s Class 5A baseball programs, Barbe, Sam Houston and Sulphur.

The trio was originally scheduled to play their nonselect Division I semifinal games at 2 p.m. Thursday, but the two games have now been bumped to the prime time slot of 5 p.m. The select Division I semifinals moved to 2 p.m.

No. 2 Barbe (37-1) and No. 3 Sulphur (34-4) will play on Field 41 at 5 p.m. Thursday, while No. 4 Sam Houston (31-4) will face No. 1 and defending state champ West Monroe (33-3) on Field 40 at 5 p.m.

It is the third time since 2013 that all three area 5A teams have made the state tournament in the same season. It happened in 2013 at Tulane’s Turchin Stadium when the quarterfinals were part of the state tournament.  Barbe and Sulphur lost in the quarterfinals that year and Sam Houston made it to the semifinals before losing to Zachary 4-1. In 2018, Sulphur beat Sam Houston 4-3 in extra innings and lost to Central-Baton Rouge 4-0 in the finals. Central beat Barbe 10-5 in its semifinal game.
