There was no hangover effect for the McNeese State Cowgirls, who followed up a defining win Tuesday with a dominant performance in a 6-2 nonconference win over Texas-Arlington Wednesday night to extend their season-best win streak to eight.
McNeese (33-12) beat nationally ranked LSU Tuesday night in front of a record crowd at Cowgirl Diamond.
“It was obviously an emotional win (Tuesday) night,” McNeese head coach James Landreneau said. “You want your kids to come in composed, stay the course.”
Shaelyn Sanders did just that. The junior right-hander pitched five scoreless innings to improve to 5-0. She allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four. She was touched for two hits and faced one batter over the minimum.
“Sanders did a good job,” Landreneau said. “The first 10 or 11 pitches of the game were strikes. She was attacking the strike zone.”
The Cowgirls wasted little time taking command against UTA (17-23), scoring three runs in the second inning. Mariana Torres reached on one of three UTA errors, followed by a Crislyne Moreno double. Torres scored on a fielder’s choice grounder to first by Rylie Bouvier. Moreno scored on a single by Kaylee Lopez. Emily Phillips scored the third run on a fielding error.
McNeese extended the lead to 5-0 in the third inning. Torres led off with a single, stole second and third, then scored on an infield single by Bouvier. Phillips hit a fielder’s choice to score Bouvier.
The lead grew to 6-0 in the fourth when Reese Reyna walked and scored from third Moreno was caught stealing at second base.
“We gave away some at-bats,” Landreneau said. “I thought we gave away some chances to score more runs. We started chasing pitches and they got some weak contact changing speeds on us. I’d like to see us improve in that area.”
Lopez, Phillips, Reyna and Alayis Seneca each had two hits for the Cowgirls. Both of Phillips’ hits were doubles and she threw out three Mavericks attempting to steal second base.
UTA scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning off reliever Ryann Schexnayder on an error and a Marley Neises RBI single. The Mavericks had two on with no outs but the Cowgirls escaped further damage with a caught stealing and inning-ending double play.
Gracie Bumpurs (6-8) took the loss, being chased after two innings.
The Cowgirls are off this weekend and return to action Tuesday at Southeastern Louisiana in a matchup of the Southland Conference’s top two teams.
