GRAND LAKE — Senior Garrett Walker worked quickly and efficiently through the Welsh lineup Thursday to lead Grand Lake to win a 1-0 four-hitter in a pitchers’ duel with Greyhounds starter Cohen Cormier.
The game between nonselect Division IV top 10 teams lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes as both pitchers threw 84 or fewer pitches. The teams combined for five hits.
Walker (5-0) scattered four hits and struck out 11 while walking one batter, the first one he faced.
“Today, (Walker) did what he has done every single day,” Grand Lake head coach Tyler Alton said. “He throws three pitches for a strike, he competes inside the zone. He feels like his stuff is better than the hitters. He just comes right at you.
“Anytime you hold somebody to zero runs, it is a good day. I think they scored 14 last time we played them. They are a very good offensive team, but we threw our guy at them this time and it was a little bit of a different story.”
Each time the Greyhounds threatened, Walker responded. With a runner on second and one out in the top of the first inning, Walker struck out two. He got a line out and ground out with a runner on second and one out in the fifth.
Welsh’s Caleb Miller led off the seventh with a single but was thrown out by catcher Conner Guillotte trying to steal second, and Walker finished off the Greyhounds (14-13, 5-5) with back-to-back strikeouts.
Cormier held the Hornets to a single hit in the first inning while striking out four and issuing three walks.
“(Cormier) did a good job,” Welsh head coach Caleb Hayes said. “He gave us a chance. That is all I ask him to do, go out there and throw strikes to give us a chance, make the defense work and hopefully get some run support.
“It didn’t work out in our favor today. We saw their No. 1 on the mound. He is a good kid. We have been playing against him for a couple of years. He pitched against us last year and beat us 5-2. He is a good kid. We just didn’t make enough adjustments today.”
The game’s lone run almost wasn’t scored. With runners on first and second in the bottom of the first inning and two outs, Luke Davis hit a single to right field. Alton had the stop sign up at third base, but the Hornets (12-8, 5-4) wound up with two runners at third. But the Hornets beat the rundown with Garrett sliding around Welsh catcher Casey Cormier for the winning run.
