Moving forward, Will Wade is going back to what he knows best.

The new McNeese State basketball coach has made his first coaching hire, reuniting with Brandon Chambers.

Chambers spent the 2021-22 season as an assistant under Wade at LSU. He was also a student manager at Virginia Commonwealth when Wade was an assistant coach.

Chambers spent last season on the staff at Texas Southern, where he helped the Tigers make the NCAA Tournament.

It is likely the start of a big week for Wade and the McNeese program. Wednesday is the beginning of the next national signing period. Since Wade took over as coach, the Cowboys have received commitments from a couple of guards looking to transfer.

Wade had also said recently he felt good about his chances of getting a few post players into the program.

“We will be active,” Wade has said. “We know the type of players we think can help win a championship in the Southland Conference.”

While with Wade at LSU, Chambers helped the Tigers earn an at-large NCAA Tournament berth in 2022.

Before LSU, Chambers was at Texas Southern for a pair of seasons as an assistant coach. He helped TSU win 14 of its last 15 games, including a tourney victory over Mount Saint Mary’s, the program’s second NCAA victory.

Prior to his first stint at Texas Southern, Chambers spent three years at Nevada, working as the director of basketball operations under Eric Musselman, who is now the head coach at Arkansas.

From 2013-2015 Chambers was an assistant coach at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia.

He graduated from VCU in 2011.
