The dramatic high-school lives of the children of iconic Disney heroes and villains will be told on the stage of the LaGrange High School Auditorium, 3420 Louisiana Ave., this weekend.
“Descendants: The Musical” is being performed by the students of the Calcasieu Theatrical Arts (CTA), a Calcasieu Parish School Board collaborative theater program that began in 2018.
CTA creates a space for almost 100 students from schools across the Calcasieu Parish school district to express themselves in a theatrical setting, including Barbe High School, LaGrange High School, Sam Houston High School and Washington-Marion High School.
The musical comedy is based on the Disney Channel original movie “Descendants” and takes place in the United State of Auradon, a country ruled by Belle and Beast. After coming into power, Belle and Beast banished the villains to the Isle of the Lost.
This is where the story kicks off. When the son of Queen Belle and King Beast, Ben, declares that he will offer four children of Disney villains – Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil, Jay, son of Jafar, Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen, and Mal, daughter of Maleficent – a chance at redemption by allowing them to attend Auradon Prep.
The narrative follows the villainous group of four as they integrate into the lives of Auradonians and embark on a journey to discover themselves.
The students have been practicing for “Descendants: The Musical” since the end of last year, and will be conducting dress rehearsals every day leading up to the opening performance.
The production is complex, containing exciting special effects and intricate stage design that switches betweens the slums of the Isle of the Lost and the campus of Auradon Prep.
The costuming is also impressive, with characters donning vibrant outfits, hair and makeup that is reminiscent of their infamous parents.
The show features over 12 musical performances, not including reprises, such as “Rotten to the Core,” “Ways to be Wicked,” and “Better Together.”
The show opens Friday night, March 31, at 7 p.m., with two more performances on Saturday, April 1, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Special field trip performances for area schools will be performed Monday April 3 through Thursday April 6.
Seating is limited. All tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the LaGrange High School front office or online. The Lagrange front office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
