Heath Schroyer continues to take phone calls and do his due diligence even as reports of Will Wade coming to McNeese State continue.
“I can tell you that no agreement has been offered or accepted by a candidate,” said Schroyer, the McNeese athletic director.
The Cowboys are looking for a new men’s basketball coach after “parting ways” with John Aiken after two seasons last Wednesday.
Friday “The Athletic” posted a story saying McNeese was “closing in” on signing Wade.
“I don’t know where they got that,” said Schroyer. “We are continuing to work through the process and hoping to find the right fit for McNeese. “We want to get the right guy who wants to be here and the right guy for this community.”
Wade, the former LSU coach, seems to be a fan favorite but he is also a big name for a program like McNeese that is hardly a basketball power.
“I think coach Wade is an excellent coach with a proven history of winning at a high level,” said Schroyer. “Coach Wade has a lot of options.
“We can’t just settle on one direction; we have to look at all the options and possibilities.”
Schroyer admitted he has spoken to Wade and more than a few other coaches, many who have expressed interest in the job including one or two from the Southland Conference.
“I can say I have talked to at least 10 quality coaches,” said Schroyer. “It has been amazing. Some really good coaches have reached out to me in the past couple of days. I think we will have a lot of options.”
