Last-minute layup lifts Carver over Peabody

Jaylon Hicks made a reverse layup with 8 seconds left to give George Washington Carver a 46-44 win over Peabody in a Select Division II semifinal Thursday at the state basketball tournament at Burton Coliseum.
The Rams will play Madison Prep in the championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Carver rallied in the fourth quarter after trailing by five after three quarters. Hicks nine of his team-high 16 points in the quarter. Daijon Leatherman had 14 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots for Carver.
Rashad Mitchell led Peabody with 12 points.
The Rams will appear in a state championship game for a third consecutive season. They were the Class 4A champion last season.

The Chargers dominated the second half, outscoring the Eagles by 18 points after a close first half.
Shaw shot 23 percent from the field but were within 14-10 at halftime. Madison Prep found a groove on offense in the third quarter. Jayce Depron scored seven of his game-high 19 points in the quarter.
Kameron Johnson led Shaw with 12 points. The Eagles made 1 of 10 field goal attempts in the first quarter and missed all of its 14 3-point field goal attempts.

The Panthers scored 14 points in the extra frame to escape with the win.
Crescent City sent the game into overtime on a 3-pointer by Dwight Magee with 2 seconds left in regulation time.
The Panthers will play Northwood-Lena in the championship game at noon Saturday.
Kobe Mack led Lincoln Prep with 18 points. Bralyn Mayfield had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Magee led Crescent City with 20 points. Isiah Stevens added 15.

The Green Wave went on a 16-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to take the lead for good.
Jeremiah Lewis and Trey Parham each scored six points in the decisive run.
Ponchatoula made 19 of 20 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Allen Graves led the Green Wave with 20 points and 19 rebounds.
Braylan McNeal led Ruston with 16 points and 17 rebounds.

New Iberia scored the final seven points on regulation to send the game into overtime, then dominated the extra period in its 47-43 win over Walker in a Non-Select Division I semifinal.
Wayne Randall made four free throws and Christian Walker made a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter run.
The Yellow Jackets scored the first seven points of overtime, all from the free throw line, and held Walker scoreless until 27 seconds were left.
Randall led NISH with 16 points.
Warren Young led Walker with 14 points.
