Jimmy “Ding” Darrel Spell

Jimmy Darrel “Ding” Spell, 82, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, in a local hospital.
He was a native of Indian Bayou and was a longtime resident of Choupique. Ding farmed rice, soybeans, and cattle. He also worked as a bus driver, starting his career in 1969, and retired after over 40 years of service with the Calcasieu Parish School Board. He enjoyed fishing in his spare time. Ding will be remembered as a very hard worker.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Martha Spell; his children, Sandra Spell Alexander, and Steven “Tuna” Spell and wife Debra; his siblings, Bruce Spell and wife Evelyn, Charlotte Goodfriend and husband Joe, and Jan Nelson, all of Sulphur; his grandchildren, Keysha Nabours, Scott Spell, and Mikaela Spell; five great-grandchildren, Alexis Scarborough, Kamryn Spell, Bryson Spell, Avery Spell, and Elizabeth Spell; and four great-great-grandchildren, Brently Nabours, Brody Nabours, Rhett Bourge, and Lucas Lee Scarborough. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bruce “Blue” and Shirley Spell.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 10, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. James Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss. Pallbearers will be Dusty Duhon, Mark Spell, Blain Spell, Greg Pavlovich, Jody “Duke” Goodfriend, and Jean Paul Duhon. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service Friday in the funeral home.
