LHSAA Marsh Madness: FCA slow but sure against Rapides

Family Christian kept the game at its preferred slow pace and pulled away late in a 46-38 win over Rapides in a Select Division V semifinal game at Burton Coliseum on Monday, the first day of the boys state basketball tournament.

The Flames scored the game’s final six points after the Mustangs had pulled within two points with 3 minutes left. Jordan Jones scored two baskets and Caleb Martin added a pair of free throws as FCA put the game away.

Martin finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Jones added 11 points, including six in the fourth quarter.

“When you come in with inexperience playing in a big venue, the kids feel it,” FCA head coach Isaac Amedee said.

“In the first half, we were almost too unselfish and a bit timid. We settled in during the second half. We were standing around and watching in the first half and were a lot more attentive to detail and a lot more aggressive in the second half.”

Ali Wahid led Rapides with 10 points.

After Clark scored the game’s first basket, the Vikings scored the next 19 points. Avoyelles Charter led by 10 or more points the rest of the way. .

Clark whittled away at the lead in the second half, going on a 13-0 run in the third quarter to pull within 10 points.

Avoyelles Charter ended the game with a 13-4 outburst.

Lawrence Pickney finished with a team-high 18 points for J.S. Clark.

Jalen Brown led Avoyelles Charter with 18 points. Talik Williams and Armonii Benjamin added 13 each.

The Cavaliers pulled away late in the first half and hung on late in the second half.

Calvary Baptist closed the first half with a 10-2 run to take a 28-20 halftime lead.

CNI twice got within four points in the last 2 minutes, but Cavaliers guard Rondale Hill made 3 of 4 free throws in the final 40 seconds to seal the victory.

Kameron Kennon led Calvary with 14 points. Hill scored 12 and Landon Sylvie added 10.

Jaden Mitchell led CNI with 15 points. Tristan Kewis added 12 and Kylan Chretien added 10.
