Charges upgraded after shooting victim dies

The victim in a Lake Charles shooting has died, resulting in an upgrade in charges for the suspected shooter, according to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting took place at about 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26. Deputies were dispatched to a residence on La. 3059 in Lake Charles in reference to the shooting. Upon arrival, deputies located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

Deputies say they learned Ruben Acosta-Camacho, 45, of Lake Charles was responsible for the shooting. After he was located, he was transported to CPSO for questioning, where he confirmed to detectives he shot the victim, according to CPSO.

He was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with attempted second-degree murder.

On Saturday, CPSO detectives learned the victim, Arturo Acosta, 36, who was a family member of Acosta-Camacho, died from injuries he sustained from the shooting. Detectives upgraded Acosta-Camacho’s charges from attempted second-degree murder to second- degree murder; and illegal use of a weapon during a crime of violence. Judge Tony Fazzio set his bond at $690,000.
