A year in the making, Cowgirls determined to get past first round

At least it won’t take long to go over the scouting report.

Just five days after knocking off New Orleans in the regular-season finale, the Cowgirls will try for a repeat performance on Monday.

McNeese State opens the Southland Conference basketball tournament against the very same Privateers they ended the season with on Wednesday.

The sixth-seeded Cowgirls (11-18) take on No. 7 UNO (8-19) in the second game on their own floor at the Legacy Center. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday.

The winner will play third-seeded Lamar on Tuesday.

“We have a lot prove,” said senior Desirae Hansen. “Tuesday is not guaranteed.”

The Cowgirls learned that the hard way last year when they lost as the No. 4 seed to eighth-seeded Incarnate Word, which went on to win the title.

“We have to be prepared,” Hansen said. “We were not ready last year. We will be this year.”

For Divine Tanks, this season is a bit more personal. The senior from Barbe High has been at McNeese her entire career and never made it out of the first round.

“I feel there is a lot to get past that first game,” Tanks said. “We just have to play our game. We can win it if we play the right way.”

McNeese and the Privateers split their two regular-season games with the Cowgirls winning at home 68-56.

“We saved a few wrinkles,” McNeese head coach Lynn Kennedy said. “We are excited to play again.”

The Cowgirls looked strong against the Privateers on Wednesday as a late 16-2 run led to a 68-56 victory after UNO won the first meeting in New Orleans in February.

“I think we are playing our best ball right now,” Kennedy said. “This is when you want to play your best, in March.”

This is what the Cowgirls have been waiting a full year for. McNeese entered last year’s tournament with high hopes as the four seed only to get wiped out in the first game by eventual champ Incarnate Word. Now it gets a second chance.

“This comes down to us,” Hansen said. “It has been that way all year.”

Tanks will look to have another big night against the Privateers. The senior tied her season best with 18 points and eight rebounds to lead McNeese in Wednesday’s victory.

“It is tough to play team twice in a row and beat them, but we are looking forward to it,” Tanks said. “I have had some good games against them, and I hope to be able to do it again Monday.

“We have to just win Monday and not look ahead.”
