Cowboy pitching keeps rolling

It wasn’t the one-man dominant show of Friday night, but Saturday’s performance had the same results.
A trio of Cowboy hurlers worked in and out of trouble to shutout George Washington 7-0 in the second game of a weekend series at Joe Miller Ballpark.
McNeese will try for the sweep Sunday in an 11 a.m. brunch special.
The win was the Cowboys (7-4) sixth in their last eight games. They have committed just one error over their last four and have blanked opposing batters for the last 21 innings.
“When you pitch and play defense, you have a chance in every game,” said McNeese head coach Justin Hill.
Derrick Cherry got the win, his first decision as a Cowboy. Cherry worked the first 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and striking out six while walking a pair in his third start.
“I thought Derrick Cherry came out and set the tone,” said Hill. “He came out hot.”
Cherry struck out the first three batters he faced. Cameron Lejeune and Brock Barthelemy followed. For Barthelemy, his 1.1 innings of work marked the first time he was on the mound for McNeese.
Despite leaving 16 runners on base, the Cowboy offense was still able to have a big day.
Tre’ Obregon, who entered the game hitting just .206, raised his average 69 points with a pair of doubles in three at-bats. He also walked once and was hit by a pitch.
Obregon provided the biggest hit of the day with a two-out shot to run that scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning. That double, his second of the day, gave McNeese a 4-0 lead.
“It was a big deal,” Obregon. “You still have coaches and teammates believe in you, but you want to contribute.”
Andrew Gonzales and Dean Bittner each added a pair of hits as McNeese collected 10 in all.
“Winning is great but we are still not satisfied,” said Obregon.
Odell Austin started and took the loss for GW (2-8). Odell went just four innings, allowing four runs on four hits while walking five of the 24 Cowboys he faced. He also hit two batters.
Ty Abraham will make his first start of the season for McNeese in today’s series finale.
