Ole Miss scored six runs over the first two innings, with Mikaylah Allee driving in a pair of runs with a first-inning double. Paige Smith and Ainsley Furbush also had run-scoring hits for the Rebels.

“They we’re on us, they barreled up some balls early and we couldn’t get out of there quite fast enough,” McNeese head coach James Landreneau said.

“They swung the bats a little better than us, pitched a bit better than us and played outstanding defense behind their pitcher, turning a couple of double plays.”

McNeese scored both runs in the fifth inning. Corine Poncho doubled to the right center field wall to score Brooke Otto, who reached on a single. Chloe Gomez singled to score Erin Ardoin.

Poncho reached base three times, walking twice. Jada Munoz had the only other Cowgirl hit.

Landreneau said he’s pleased wih how the Cowgirls freshmen are coming along. Otto had a game-winning homer Saturday and Kelsey Gaspard had a pinch-hit RBI. Five freshmen started Sunday.

“I’m more encouraged about this team than discouraged after this,” he said.

“We saw young people be composed. Otto got the start yesterday and went 3-for-3 with the home run. We know that Poncho is a powerful bat. As she matures she can be a great help. Munoz had two knocks yesterday and then got one today. They’re not overmatched or intimidated.”
