MOSS BLUFF — Two-way star Lexi Dibbley starred in the circle and at the plate while leading host Sam Houston to a 9-0 win over South Beauregard Tuesday in the season opener for both teams.

Dibbley pitched the first five innings of a combined no-hitter and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and long solo home run to center field.

Dibbley struck out eight and escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the third inning with a tapper to the mound for a force out and inning-ending grounder to short.

“She was throwing all of her pitches well,” Broncos head coach Beth Domingue said of Dibbley.

“That one inning (the third, when three South Beauregard batters walked) she was overthrowing a little bit. Besides that her control was better than it was in the preseason scrimmages. She was excellent.”

Dibbley added a diving catch on a pop-up in the fifth inning. The Broncos didn’t commit an error.

The Broncos scored once in the first when Brylie Fontenot was hit by a pitch, stole second and third and scored on an error. Dibbley’s homer in the third doubled the lead. Sam Houston blew the game open with a five-run fourth inning highlighted by run-scoring hits from Aubrey Hobbs, Bree Fontenot, Hailey Mire and a sacrifice fly by Carolina Eidson.

Bree Fontenot added a solo homer in the sixth inning.

“I think we were trying to overdo it, trying to do too much and not playing out game,” Domingue said. “We were getting under the ball and trying to pull the ball too much. But then we started making good adjustments in that fourth inning. We still have work to do.”

Cierra Hobbs pitched the final two innings for Sam Houston to complete the no-hitter.

Aubrey Hobbs and Bree Fontenot each had two hits for the Broncos.

Maggie Bowman reached twice on walks for South Beauregard.
