Six Southwest La. wrestlers win individual gold at LHSAA state championships

The final day of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships in Bossier City ended with six gold medalist from Southwest La., while Basile’s quest for a fifth consecutive state championship fell just short.

Basile as edged by Archbishop Shaw 215.5-213 for the Division III team title.

The Bearcats had 11 wrestlers place in the top six, including two state champions in Luc Johnson at 145 pounds and Christian Bergeron at 182 pounds.

Johnson, the top seed in his weight class, won his first three matches by pin before beating No. 2 Liam O’Connor (DeLaSalle) 12-2 in the finals.

In the 182-pound final, two-seed Bergeron edged No. 1 Jason Krail (DeLaSalle) 5-3, scoring all of his points in the second period.

Sam Houston finished sixth in Division II led by a pair of state champions in Pollex Coleman (120-pounds) and Tyson Roach (126-pounds).

No. 1 Coleman pinned No. 3 Brennan Romero (Teurlings Catholic) in 1:11 in the 120 finals.

Roach, the top seed at 126, trailed No. 3 Brennan Boyer (Teurlings Catholic) 6-2 heading into the third period but scored five points in the final 20 seconds to win 7-6, going ahead on a 3-point near fall in the closing seconds.

No. 1 seed Camden Gautreaux became DeQuincy’s first individual wrestling state champion after beating Carson Dalton (Archbishop Shaw) 8-1 in the Division III 138-pound final.

Sulphur’s Blayden Laidlaw won his first state championship as the No. 3 seed in Division I 220-pounds. He upset No. 2 Griffin Ellis (Jesuit) with a 51-second pin in the semifinals and beat No. 5 Gage Kelly (Live Oak) in the finals, pinning him with 39 seconds left in the second period. Laidlaw won 4 of his 5 matches by pin.

Sam Houston’s Tyson Roach and Basile’s Luc Johnson and Christian Bergeron repeated as state champions.
