Sulphur Christian Community Coalition (SC3) has finally made good on a delicious pre-hurricane idea. The Sunny Side Cafe, located on the east side of the SC3 Community Center at the corner of East Burton and Canal Streets is now open Monday – Thursday, 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
“It’s one of the social enterprises that’s part of SC3’s Community Works Job Readiness and Training program,” said Joanne Coleman, SC3.
SC3 works to restore community through empowerment and economic development to break the multi-generation cycle of poverty with a variety of programs. This is just one.
“When Hurricane Laura hit, it did extensive damage to our kitchen, so when we rebuilt we were able to make the changes needed to be able to open Sunny Side,” Coleman said.
Sunny Side Cafe is not just a place to order food. It is a way to help others and build community. Staff trains in a way that gives them the broadest range of knowledge to pursue a future career in food service and entrepreneurship.
Purchases help SC3 provide on-the-job training, soft skills training, job coaching and other services.
The menu includes concession-type items such as salads, artisan pizzas, soup, sandwiches and desserts including cookies, funnel cakes and ice cream.
