Miami is hiring Lance Guidry who was defensive coordinator at Marshall last season and recently accepted the same position at Tulane, to lead its defense.
The 51-year-old native of Welsh is a former McNeese State player, assistant coach and head coach. He was hired way from Marshall by Tulane on Jan. 23. He’ll replace Kevin Steele on Mario Cristobal’s staff at Miami. Steele is reportedly on his way to Alabama to become Nick Saban’s defensive coordinator after working that position for one season with the Hurricanes.
Alabama has yet to make the hiring of Steele and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees official. Rees had been assistant at Notre Dame.
Tulane announced the hiring of Guidry to replace Chris Hampton, who left the New Orleans-based school to join Oregon’s staff as an assistant coach.
Guidry’s defenses emphasize the use of four pass rushers, five defensive backs and two linebackers.
At Marshall, Guidry’s defense ranked third in the nation in yards per play last season (4.56) and 26th nationally in 2021 (5.14 yards per play). Marshall was first in the country in third-down defense. Guidry also coached the Thundering Herd’s safeties the last two seasons.
Marshall’s defense ranked fifth in run defense, sixth in scoring defense (16 ppg) and interceptions (18), and eighth in total defense (294.5 ypg). The Hurricanes allowed 376 yards per game, 65th in the nation, and 26.7 points per game, 67th in the country.
Guidry résumé includes two stints at his alma mater McNeese and stops at Miami-Ohio, Western Kentucky, Southeastern Louisiana and Florida Atlantic.
