St. Louis Catholic kept its District 3-3A title hopes alive with a 54-51 win over South Beauregard.
The win left the teams tied atop the girls basketball district standings at 7-1 with four games remaining.
Paris Guillory carried the Saints (20-6) to the win with 34 points, 23 rebounds and nine steals. She scored 13 points in the fourth quarter as the Saints stormed back after trailing by 15 points in the first half.
Guillory gave the Saints the lead with two free throws with 21 seconds left in the game.
South Beauregard (20-8) led most of the way, taking a 30-15 lead midway through the second quarter. St. Louis chipped away, cutting the deficit to nine points at halftime and three after the third quarter.
The Lady K’s stretched the lead to nine early in the fourth quarter on back-to-back 3-pointers by Kaelyn Gunter, but scored four points over the last 5 minutes.
“We got them off track with our pressure defense,” Saints head coach Tony Johnson said. “We went to the full-court press. They turned it over a couple of times and we were able to get some easy looks for Paris.”
Guillory’s heroics we’re no surprise to Johnson.
“You would give up anything for her because she comes to work every day,” he said. “You see people double- and triple-teaming her and she’s still scoring 34 points. She’s a special kid and Louisiana Tech is getting a hell of a player.”
Jalyn Williams led South Beauregard with 12 points. Raelyn Gunter and Kenzie Hudler added 11 each.
South Beauregard beat St. Louis by 37 points on Dec. 28 in Longville.
“They embarrassed us when we went up there to their place,” Johnson said. “Our kids are battle tested and it showed tonight. They showed they have pride in St. Louis basketball and we’re able to overcome some obstacles being down nine at halftime.”
