The LaGrange Gators stayed solid on defense and shared the ball on offense in a 79-67 win over Fairview at the Hamilton Christian/Martin Luther King Classic at Burton Coliseum.
Four Gators scored in double figures and LaGrange never trailed in the game after building an early 22-11 lead and extending the margin to as many as 18 points in the second half. Jason Wilson led LaGrange (11-7) with 22 points, including two 3-pointers in a 14-5 Gators run to open the second half. That run extended a nine-point halftime lead to 16 midway through the third quarter. Wilson started the run with a 3-pointer and scored eight points in the outburst, which Omarion Randolph capped with a driving basket to put LaGrange in control at 51-35. Four of the five Gators scored in the outburst, with only Wilson getting more than one basket,
Fairview (22-5) scored on its first two possessions of the half but went into a drought as the Gators broke things open.
“We knew coming in that they were a good technical, balanced, fundamental team, so we emphasized staying in front of them, not jump and try to make them score over us,” LaGrange head coach Jason Wilson said. “We tried to put pressure on them to slow them down and get them out of their rhythm on offense.”
Randolph finished with 13 points. Knyles Randle added 11 and David Martin scored 10 for the Gators.
“We want everyone to be involved in the offense, let the ball work,” Coach Wilson said. “We did that really well today.”
Wilson said unselfishness is becoming a habit for his team, which has won six straight games.
“We have been up and down on the season, but now we are starting to come together,” he said. “Early on, I thought everyone was trying to be that guy so we had some selfishness at the beginning. Once we figured that out and slowed things down, we’ve been better over the past four or five games.”
Landon Strother led Fairview with 23 points. Dalton Goode scored 18 and Brett Jinks added 12 for the Panthers.
