Howard bows out of LSU QB race, Tigers gain defensive back in Ohio St. transfer

LSU’s crowded quarterback room is about to gain a little more space.

Promising freshman Walker Howard plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal after one year at the school, the website TigerBait.com reported.

The report said Walker met with the LSU coaching staff Wednesday before making his decision.

Meanwhile, LSU continued to stock a position of need when Ohio State cornerback J.K. Johnson announced on social media that he was transferring to LSU.

Johnson, who will have three years of eligibility remaining, is from St. Louis, where he played at De Smet High School for current LSU cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples.

Walker, a five-star recruit out of St. Thomas More in Lafayette, likely would have started spring practice No. 3 on the depth chart behind returning starter Jayden Daniels and backup redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier.

LSU has another highly touted quarterback in its incoming recruiting class with Rickie Collins of Woodlawn High in Baton Rouge. Collins has enrolled and will be available for spring practice.

Howard, whose father Jamie was also a quarterback for the Tigers in the early 1990s, maintained his redshirt this season, playing in one regular-season
