Cowgirls try to regroup

Having let their last game slip away, the Cowgirls look to regroup on the road tonight.

McNeese State takes on Northwestern State a week after rallying from a slow start to top the Demons 71-65 in Lake Charles.

The Cowgirls (4-10, 1-2 Southland Conference), who have lost four of their last five games, are struggling to find consistency.

“They play really well at home so it will be tougher,” said McNeese head coach Lynn Kennedy, whose team is winless in seven road games. “We will have to play better.”

The Demons (5-8, 1-2) are 5-2 at home.

Paris Mullins scored 21 points, 12 in the fourth quarter, and Desirae Hansen added 20 with five assists in the first meeting.

Hansen followed that up with 18 points on Saturday in a 79-71 home loss to Texas A&M-Commerce.

Mullins, Divine Thanks and Alicia Falkowska are giving McNeese a trio of big players who hurt the Demons. Falkowska had eight points in her best game of the season last time out.

“I think she is a force defensive,” Kennedy said of Falkowska. “She got some confidence going offensively. It shows what we can do when she is in there.”

However, it is Mullins who is hard to handle inside.

“Paris is a mismatch,” Kennedy said. “She is a great passer too.”

Mullins leads McNeese in scoring at 10.5 points a game despite playing fewer than 17 minutes a game.

Shama Ayers hit the first five 3-pointers she took for the Demons in the first meeting as they raced to a 27-16 lead after the first quarter.

“She hit some really tough shots, but after the first five we took that away from her,” Kennedy said.

Ayers led the Demons but managed two points after the opening 5 minutes.

“We just want wins,” said Kennedy, whose team has won four of the last five meetings with the Demons. “Road wins, home wins, it doesn’t matter.”
