Welcome the Christmas season at free events throughout December at Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center

Mark Saturdays in December for a “fruitful” Downtown Lake Charles family shopping experience, Christmas card crafting, storybook time and snowglobe gazing. Matt Young, director of Cultural Affairs for the city of Lake Charles announced the following holiday-themed happenings at the Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center, 1001 Ryan St., Lake Charles.
On Saturday, Dec. 3, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., “The Holiday Edition of Meet Me at the Market” is sure to make spirits bright. In addition to finding baked goods, local honey, jellies, stocking stuffers and sustainable farmed meats and produce, the Charlestown Farmers Market will feature entertainment from Penny Gillespie, Jarius Daigle, the Christmas carolers of North Lake Charles Kiwanis Club, F.G. Bulber Youth Orchestra and the Premier Dancers of Lake Charles.
Every Saturday in December, Jeanine Blaney, Black Heritage Gallery Curator, will lead youngsters in a Christmas card craft project at 10 a.m.
“All ages are welcome to apply their creative skills using several mediums from crayons and watercolors to stamps and markers,” Young said. “The Calcasieu Council on Aging will distribute the handmade Christmas cards to area nursing home residents.”
The popular “Turning Pages” reading program for children will make its return Saturdays in December at 11 a.m. Ward 3 Marshal Nathan Keller kicks off the series on Dec. 3.
“ ‘Turning Pages’ began in January 2022,” Young said. “It’s the brainchild of Marjorie Latigue, project specialist at Historic City Hall.”
Looking for inspiration to start pulling down decorations from the attic and out of closets? Want to see the looks on children’s faces when they see a 700-piece Snow Village? Then get to the Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center Saturday, Dec. 3. The late Nancy Stone Crowe annually displayed the 700-piece Snow Village in her home during the holiday season, according to Young. Her family donated it to the McNeese Foundation in 2019. That year, more than 3,800 people visited the museum during the month of December to see the village.
