Living on the edge, Broncos on playoff bubble

MOSS BLUFF — Sam Houston will be on the playoff bubble heading into the final week of the regular season after E.D. White beat the Broncos 21-14 Friday night in a nondistrict home game.
The Cardinals (8-1), ranked second in Class 3A, earned their second win of the season against a Class 5A team.
The Broncos entered the week 26th in the Division I non-select power ratings. The top 28 qualify for the playoffs. Sam Houston closes the regular season next week at Southside in a District 3-5A game.
Sam Houston (4-5) opened the scoring with an eight-play, 90-yard drive. Jaxon Landreneau hauled in a 7-yard pass from Gavin Stout to give the Broncos a 7-0 lead.
The Cardinals stormed back with two second-quarter touchdowns. The first was set up by a 35-yard punt return to the Broncos 15 by Matthew Melancon. Owen Thibodeaux scored on a 4-yard run to tie the score.
E.D. White took the lead on a 15-yard run by Dylan Worthington with 1:35 left in the half.
The Cardinals ran for 142 yards in the half. Sam Houston moved the ball just as well, gaining 145 yards in the half. The Broncos squandered a scoring chance on their first possession, turning the ball over on downs at the Cardinals’ 18-yard line.
Ben Guidry scored in a 10-yard run in the third quarter to stretch E.D. White’s lead to 21-7 midway through the third quarter.
Sam Houston made it a one-possession game midway through the fourth when Drew Dronet took a swing pass 53 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown, narrowing the deficit to 21-14.
The Broncos got the ball back with 2:50 left after the Cardinals missed a field goal attempt. After gaining two first downs, Sam Houston was stuffed on a fourth-and-1 play at their 43-yard line with 1:14 remaining.
Sam Houston forced a three-and-out and got a last possession with 44 seconds left, but an E.D. White sack as time expired ended the game after the Broncos had reached midfield.
