GRAND LAKE — Welsh snuffed out Grand Lake’s high-powered ground game Thursday to become the last unbeaten team in Southwest Louisiana and win 43-7.
Grand Lake entered the game on a five-game win streak, averaging 48.2 points and 400 rushing yards a game. But the Greyhounds held them to season lows in points (seven) and rushing yards (230), and Hornets running back Ian Vigo was held well below his season average of 182 yards per game. Vigo had 116 yards on 30 carries.
Welsh went heavy on the run in the first half but mixed it up in the second half to score 29 points.
Kennon LeGros scored three second-half touchdowns and finished with 142 yards on 20 carries. Quarterback Gabe Gillett added 57 yards and two scores on 10 carries and completed 12 of 19 passes for 164 yards. Caleb Miller caught six passes for 109 yards.
Welsh (5-0, 1-0) quickly added to its 14-7 halftime lead with a 1-minute scoring drive to open the second half on a 14-yard run by LeGros.
The defense came up with an interception by Trevor Miller, a sack from La’Troy Pattum and Tanner Mallet’s fumble recovery to stop the Hornets’ (5-1, 0-1) next three drives. All three plays led to touchdowns, a 2-yard run by Guillett and two scores by LeGros.
Welsh limited the Hornets to 122 total yards in the first half and forced five punts, which set up the Greyhounds with a short field on both of their first-half scores.
Grand Lake punted on its second possession, and Jonavon Begnaud returned it 31-yards to set up Gillett’s 8-yard touchdown run with 4:04 left in the first quarter.
Welsh forced Grand Lake to punt from its 9-yard line late in the second quarter and got great field position after a short punt. Begnaud tossed a 20-yard scoring strike to J.J. Artis, and Gillett ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Greyhounds a 14-7 lead with 1:43 left in the first half.
Most of the Hornets’ yardage came on their opening and closing drives.
Grand Lake took a 7-0 lead on a 41-yard run by Brycen Guillory after a 67-yard, seven-play drive with 8:11 left in the first quarter. Guillory looked like he was stopped near the line of scrimmage, but slipped under some defenders and broke away up the middle.
Guillory had 81 yards on 12 carries.
