Pirates raid LG’s swamp

Caden Campisi crashed LaGrange’s homecoming party, running for three touchdowns to lead the Kaplan Pirates to a 40-14 nondistrict win Friday night.

Kaplan’s ground-and-pound attack produced scores on three of the first four Pirates possessions.

Kaplan (1-2) ran on all 26 plays from scrimmage in the first half.

The first drive was a nine-play, 86-yard touchdown drive capped by a 5-yard Campisi touchdown run.

LaGrange (0-3) responded with a nice drive, reaching the Kaplan 9 before losing a fumble.

The Pirates drove 92 yards in 13 plays with Brandon Bearb scoring on a 6-yard run.

LaGrange answered with a quick scoring drive. Jason Wilson hit Kalyb Mitchell with a 20-yard scoring pass to get LaGrange 16-6.

The Gators recovered a Pirates fumble on the ensuing drive, but had a drive stall on a penalty and incompletion,

Kaplan blocked the resulting punt, with Dane Frick returning it 28 yards to the Gators 3-yard line.

Campisi scored from a yard out to put the Pirates up 24-6 at the half. He finished the half with 152 yards on 18 carries.

Wilson threw for 98 yards in the half, completing his first nine attempts.

The teams traded scores in the third quarter. Keshaun Doucet scored on a 3-yard run for LaGrange. Kaplan’s Landon Cheek returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.

Campisi scored on a 57-yard run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring. The fullback finished with 289 yards on 28 carries. Bearb added 81 yards on 12 carries. Nine of Campisi’s 28 carries went for 10 or more yards

Wilson completed 21 of 30 passes for 251 yards to lead the Gators. Mitchell had 101 yards on four receptions. Randolph caught eight passes for 82 yards.

Each of the last seven Gators possessions reached Kaplan territory, but the Gators could only convert the production into two scores. Two ended on turnovers inside the end zone. Another reached the Kaplan 19 but stalled after a holding penalty.

Wilson had 153 passing yards and 17 rushing yards in the second half, when the Gators gained three first downs on each of their three possessions, but scored once.

Kameron Darmond had nine receptions for 79 yards for LaGrange. The Gators travel to St. Edmund of Eunice next week.
