WELSH — Senior running back Kennon LeGros provided the scoring, and sophomore defensive back Jonavon Begnaud made the big defensive plays as Welsh roughed up Hamilton Christian 65-0 Thursday night.
“I thought offensively we played really well,” said Welsh head coach Cody Gueringer. “We maximized opportunities. Defensively, when they gave us chances, we capitalized on them. They just have a businesslike approach every single week.”
LeGros scored five touchdowns, all in the first half, to bring his season total to seven in two games. LeGros ran for 127 yards on 16 carries.
“The offensive line played great and Kennon played great,” Gueringer said. “We had a short field a lot.
“(Kennon) did really well for us, and he is understanding the offense. The offensive linemen and even the receivers block, and they just all understand the offense.”
Begnaud picked off three passes that led to 20 points, and Welsh (2-0) led 48-0 at halftime.
“He is a leader,”Gueringer said of Begnaud. “We moved him from cornerback because one of our guys went down at free safety.
“He is a leader and is going to take control. The first time we played seven-on-seven we knew he was going to understand what to do back there, and it showed tonight.”
Welsh forced six turnovers, five on interceptions, and held the Warriors (0-3) to 73 yards of total offense. Brecken Haydel and Ayden Miller made second-half interceptions, and Collin LeJeune recovered a third-quarter fumble.
Welsh quarterback Gabe Gillett threw two touchdowns in the second quarter on plays of 33 yards to J.J. Artis and 28 yards to Caleb Miller.
Trailing 8-0, the Warriors’ Messiah Simien recovered a fumble to set Hamilton up at midfield, but the Warriors turned the ball over on downs. It was the lone drive in the first half that the Greyhounds didn’t score on.
Hamilton reached the Warriors’ 24-yard line in the third quarter but fumbled the ball away.
Javon Vital had three catches for 41 yards for the Warriors.
