Tropical weather outlook busy as peak of hurricane season nears

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring four areas, one in the Caribbean and three in the Atlantic, for possible tropical cyclone formation over the next five days.

None of these areas pose any immediate threats to southeast Texas, southwest or central Louisiana

The disturbance in the Caribbean is the only one at this point that would have possible impacts to the local area Labor Day weekend, and this would likely be just an increase in rainfall; however, confidence is low regarding if these potential impacts will even materialize.

There is also a slight risk for excessive rainfall and flooding for parts of Southwest Louisiana today.

Thunderstorms with high rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches or more in an hour are in the forecast. These high rainfall rates in a short period of time may lead to flooding of poor drainage urban areas, according to the National Weather Service’s Lake Charles office.

Also, if these rainfall amounts fall over areas where grounds have become saturated then there is the potential for flooding of creeks, bayous, drainage ditches and other low lying areas.

The office said there is at least a 15 percent chance of excessive rainfall across southeast Texas and extreme southwest Louisiana. There’s at least a 5 percent chance of excessive rainfall across interior southeast Texas and portions of southwest Louisiana.
