SULPHUR — After a sluggish first half, Sulphur put together a late game-winning drive and the defense held as the Tors beat St. Louis Catholic 10-7 at the SPOT Therapy/Navarre Auto Group Jamboree Friday night at Matt Walker Memorial Stadium.

From the Saints’ 9-yard line, Gage Trahan sized up the Saints defense looking for an open receiver but found a sea of green turf to his right and slipped into the end zone for a 10-7 lead with a minute left.

The Tors pressured Sains quarterback James Reina into three incomplete passes on his final four throws.

Sulphur forced four turnovers with Peyton Lemaire, Tyler Massey and Isaias Lebaron picking up fumbles and Alijah Coleman had an interception.

“I thought the defense was outstanding,” Sulphur head coach Chris Towery said. “I thought defensively we let them move early and then we buckled down and played really good football after that. (Grant Evans) made a few plays, but he is going to make plays. He is that kind of player,” Towery said of St. Louis’ star receiver.

Sulphur got the ball with 4:23 left. Trahan completed a 46-yard pass to Kaden Blalock, then was sacked on consecutive plays. Trahan responded with a 25-yard pass to hit Jonathan Hopkins on fourth down plus a Saints penalty to get to the 7-yard line to set up the go-ahead touchdown.

Trahan completed 8 of 14 passes for 121 yards and Blalock made three catches for 48 yards. Garrison Burgess ran for 48 yards on 11 carries.

Despite four turnovers, the Saints led 7-0 with 11:37 left in the first half when Hank Hebert recovered a fumble and returned it 10-yard for a touchdown.

Evans caught six passes for 116 yards and Reina completed 7 of 17 passes for 120 yards and ran for 63 yards on seven carries.
