An attempted murder suspect with a lengthy rap sheet is being sought in connection with an early morning shooting on South Main Street in Jennings.

Police Chief Danny Semmes said an arrest warrant was issued Tuesday for Dandre Javonte Nixon, 26, on a charge of attempted second-degree murder. The charges stem from an early morning shooting that occurred on S. Main Street near Sumner Street, he said.

Semmes said police were dispatched to South Main Street around 3:46 a.m. Tuesday in response to a male subject who was shot in the torso.

“Our officers arrived, found the victim and rendered first aid until the ambulance arrived,” Semmes said.

Semmes said the victim was shot at the corner of South Main and Sumner Street while working on a vehicle that had broken down, but ran to a nearby area where he collapsed. Several shell casings were recovered at the scene, he said.

The victim was transported to a Lake Charles trauma center where he was listed in stable condition after undergoing surgery for two gunshot wounds to the abdomen, Semmes said.

The victim told police that he did not know the shooter.

Police were able to identify Nixon as the suspect after releasing images captured from a video surveillance at a nearby home.

“The investigation led our officers to a video surveillance in which Nixon is seen standing on the front porch of the residence with a handgun,” Semmes said.

Shots can be heard shortly after Nixon left the porch, he said.

This is not Nixon’s first time committing a violent act, Semmes said.

“Since 2021 Dandre Nixon has been arrested 17 times in seven different parishes on various charges ranging from drugs to resisting an officer,” Semmes said. “This is his third attempted murder charge.”

Jennings police arrested Nixon in 2019 for robbery and attempted murder after he robbed a man at gunpoint and took his hot link po-boys, he said.

Nixon is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached, Semmes said.

“He has possibly been under the influence of a narcotic lately and is mentality unstable at times according to people who know him,” Semmes said, urging the public to not approach Nixon.
