A 43-year-old Sulphur man was arrested for fourth-offense DWI during a traffic stop Friday near the intersection of Maplewood Drive and Post Oak Road.
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kayla Vincent said when deputies approached the truck and spoke with the driver — William R. Rivera, 43 — they detected an odor of alcohol emitting from his breath. Deputies also observed a partially full beer bottle inside the truck.
Vincent said when deputies spoke with Rivera, he said he was on probation and his license was suspended due to prior DWIs. Rivera also told deputies he had drank two beers.
After Rivera performed poorly on a standard field sobriety test, he was arrested and transported to CPSO, where a breath intoxilizer test revealed he was over the legal limit.
Rivera, who was convicted of third-offense DWI in January 2022, was charged with fourth/m-offense DWI; driving on a roadway laned for traffic; possession of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle; and operating a vehicle while license is suspended.
Judge Tony Fazzio set his bond at $45,450 with special conditions being no contact with known drug users or convicted felons, no release unless cleared by Probation & Parole, no driving without an ignition interlock device; no driving without a valid driver’s license, he must wear an alcohol detecting ankle bracelet, subject to curfew and random drug screens, and no other criminal activity.
