A pair of two-way threats powered their schools to the state tournament and earned Most Outstanding Player honors on the American Press All-Southwest Louisiana baseball and softball teams.
Rosepine’s Ethan Frey is baseball’s top player after leading the Eagles to a second consecutive Class 2A state championship.
Kinder freshman pitcher Brianna Fontenot is the softball Most Outstanding Player after leading the Yellow Jackets back to the state tournament, where they lost in the semifinal round.
Those teams also produced the Coach of the Year winners, Rosepine’s Jeff Smith in baseball and Kinder’s Haley Landry claiming the softball honor.
Frey, a senior catcher/pitcher, led a prolific Rosepine offense by hitting .487 with 13 home runs, 64 RBIs and 28 runs scored. As a pitcher, he was 5-0 with two saves and a 0.77 ERA, with 43 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched. He was voted District 5-2A MVP and signed to play college baseball at LSU.
Fontenot was 19-2 with a 2.11 ERA and 175 strikeouts in 126 innings pitched. At the plate, she hit .518 with 19 home runs and 77 RBIs. She was District 5-2A MVP and allowed one run in four playoff games, throwing three consecutive shutouts before the Yellow Jackets lost to Port Barre 1-0 in the semifinal round.
Smith led the Eagles to a 34-2 record and successful defense of the Class 2A state championship. The titles are the only ones won by a Rosepine boys program. The Eagles finished the season with a 28-game winning streak. At the state tournament, Rosepine outscored its two opponents by a combined score of 25-0, winning both games via the five-inning, 10-run mercy rule.
Landry led the Yellow Jackets to a 31-6 record and a return trip to the state tournament. The Yellow Jackets won their three playoff games by a combined score of 34-0.
Joining Frey on the baseball team are teammates Braden Trull, Jake Smith, Grant Ducote and Logan Calcote.
A pair of infielders — Asia Richard and Cicily Hill join Fontenot — on the softball team from Kinder.
