Jeff Davis voters favor all school maintenance millages on ballot

Voters in Jeff Davis Parish approved a bond issue for improvements at Fenton Elementary School on Saturday, while voters in Lake Arthur, Jennings, Lacassine, Elton and Roanoke, approved separate school maintenance millages.

Voters in Fenton approved a 20-year, $1.7 million bond issue to replace a bond issue that expired in March for School District 5, according to unofficial results from the Secretary of State’s Office.

The bond issue passed 72-43, or 63 percent in favor, with a nine percent voter turnout.

Monies from the bond issue will help fund improvements to Fenton Elementary School.

Fenton voters also agreed to continue a separate 10-year, 4.15-mill to support maintenance and improvements for the elementary school.

The measure passed 79-36, or 69 percent in favor, with a nine percent voter turnout.

The millage, which is an increase of .13 due to reappraisal,  is expected to generate $128,000 annually.

Voters in School District 1 of Lake Arthur approved the continuance of a 10-year, 11.29-mill property tax for Jeff Davis Parish School District 1, which includes Lake Arthur elementary and high schools.

The measure passed 91-40, or 69 percent in favor, with a four percent voter turnout.

The tax is expected to collect about $421,000 annually for maintenance and improvement to the schools.

The millage is an increase of .63 due to reappraisal.

Voters in the Jennings area also approved a 10-year, 11.85 mill tax renewal for maintenance and improvement of School District 2, which includes all schools in Jennings.

It passed by a vote of 305-134, or 69 percent in favor, with a six percent voter turnout.

The tax is expected to generate $975,000 annually for maintenance and improvement of all Jennings elementary and high schools.

In Lacassine, voters passed a tax continuance in School District 8.

The 10-year, 8.88-mill property tax for maintenance and improvements for Lacassine High School passed 85-38, or by 69 percent.

Voter turnout was five percent.

The millage, which represents an increase of .27 due to reappraisal, is expected to generate $350,000 annually for upkeep of the school.

Voters in School District 22 of Elton, which includes parts of Jeff Davis and Allen parishes, agreed to a 10-year, 12.04 mill property tax continuance for maintenance and improvement for Elton elementary and high schools.

The measure passed 52-26 with 67 percent in favor.

The tax is expected to collect about $162,000 annually and reflects an increase of .15 over the previous millage.

According to the Secretary of State’s Office, six percent of registered voters in the district voted.

Voters in Welsh-Roanoke Consolidated School District No. 1, renewed a 10-year, 11.66 mill property tax for maintenance and improvement of Welsh-Roanoke Junior High School, by a 205-99 vote, or 67 percent in favor, with an eight percent voter turnout.

The tax will generate $514,000 annually.
