More than 60 artists will have their work on display and for sale during this year’s Spring Art Walk, set for 2-6 p.m. Saturday in downtown Lake Charles.
Devan Corbello, executive director of the Arts and Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana, said four street-side art markets will showcase prints, jewelry, fashion, books and other crafts. The event stretches down Ryan Street from its intersection at Mill Street, south to Pujo Street, along with Broad Street from its intersection with Bilbo Street, west to Cotten’s Famous Hamburgers.
“We think there is going to be a fantastic turnout,” he said. “It’s a perfect time to shop for Mother’s Day gifts while supporting local artists.”
Corbello said the Spring Art Walk is a great way for local artists, even those just starting out, to show off their creations to the community.
“It shows people who may be wrestling with the idea of pursuing their passions that they can be successful, whether it’s through entertainment or making crafts,” he said. “It’s very important to a community like ours that has so much talent to encourage people to follow their dreams.”
This year’s Art War competition includes student and adult divisions, Corbello said. Teams have one hour to paint a Lake Charles-based landmark, with the public using tips to vote on the best piece. After the battle, the public can participate in a silent auction, with artists receiving part of the proceeds.
Several downtown businesses are also showcasing local art during the event. They include Alexander Art Studio, Barbers on Broad, Bespoke Hat/Salon Lindsay, Botsky’s, Bux Kajun Korner, Luna Bar and Grill, Olive & Indigo, Papersmith, Pujo Street Café, The Villa Harlequin, Panorama Music House, Erdace Apartments, Tia Juanita’s, American Press, Mia’s Downtown, Steel Magnolia and Cedar Chest Antiques. Corbello said he is excited to have more renovated area businesses open again, nearly two years after Hurricane Laura’s destructive landfall.
Live entertainment will include Christian Youth Theatre, McNeese State University Cowgirl Kickers, St. Louis Catholic High School Show Choir, Barbe High School Theatre, LaGrange High School Theatre, Lake Area Ballet Theatre and Young Band Nation.
“We’re excited to get some youth groups involved and showcase their talent to the Lake Area,” Corbello said.
Several area food vendors will be at the event, including Kona Ice, Soul Sisters Food and Catering, Eavy’s Incredible Edibles, Camel Confections, Tropic Treats, Ohh Taste And See, Taymer Pop, and Diana’s Cakes, Confections and more.
Spring Art Walk sponsors include Landlocked Aviation Services, the city of Lake Charles, CSE Federal Credit Union, Hertz Investment Group and Toujors Planning Wealth Management.
