The Beauregard Parish School Board has been awarded $400,000 from the Louisiana Rescue Plan Act to assist with rebuilding costs from the overwhelming damages of Hurricanes Laura and Delta.

BPSB Superintendent Timothy Cooley said the money had been secured in the Legislature through the help of state Sen. Mike Reese.

According to Cooley, the funds must only be used in areas that the board would not otherwise have received assistance with.

“We had to find a place that wasn’t going to be covered by insurance or FEMA. If it was going to be covered by either one of those, we could not put any of the $400,000 toward it,” Cooley said.

After a thorough evaluation, Cooley said the money will be used towards repairs at the South Beauregard Upper Elementary building, and at the cafeteria roof and field house at East Beauregard High School.

In those areas, Cooley said insurance would not have fully covered the repair costs.

Board members unanimously approved a resolution to allow Cooley to sign all applicable documents to secure the funds and move forward in allocating the funds.

When asked about the process in dedicating how the funds would be used, Cooley said the list of items the money is allocated for can be redetermined as time goes on.

“If there is somewhere else that we find, we can consider allocating funds to that area later on,” Cooley said.
