McNeese State’s nonconference game with Houston was postponed Tuesday after two weather delays.
The game was scheduled to start at 6 p.m. but moved back to 6:30 p.m. due to lightning.
When play started, Houston scored four runs in the top of the first inning. The first two runs scored on a dropped third strike that would have ended the inning.
Bethany Busch followed with an RBI triple to score Kati Ray Brown. Busch scored on a double down the left-field line by Britany Shaw to put the Cougars ahead 4-0.
McNeese scored a run in the bottom of the inning. Alayis Seneca led off with an infield single, moved to third on a single to center by Kendall Talley and scored on a sacrifice fly to the center-field wall by Jil Poullard.
The game was then halted for 10 minutes while umpires and coaches from both teams held several discussions, after which a 30-minute lightning delay was called and the stadium emptied.
About 20 minutes later, McNeese announced the game was postponed.
The Cowgirls (24-15), winners of 12 of their last 13 games, resume play Thursday at Northwestern State in a three-game Southland Conference series. McNeese leads the conference with an 8-1 record. Northwestern State (24-15) is in second place at 6-3.
The Cougars (23-16-1) have won six in a row. They will try to extend their nine-game winning streak when they hosts Weber State Thursday night in the first of a three-game series.
