Far from a finished product, the Cowboys got to complete a spring camp.

For the first time in three years McNeese State’s football team went through a full offseason of practices, ending on a high note Saturday.

The offense, after a slow start, found its rhythm and put up 37 points during a controlled scrimmage. The defense was awarded three points thanks to a Tremayne Evans interception.

“I’m pretty pleased with today,” said first-year head coach Gary Goff. “We didn’t have a lot of penalties but we still have to tighten up a few things. The officials told us at the end that it was a pretty clean game overall.”

McNeese’s four quarterbacks combined to throw for 236 yards and three touchdowns. They also ran for a pair as the battle for the starting job continues.

Knox Kadum led the way with 116 yards and a touchdown, but the likely leader in the clubhouse for the job also threw the lone interception. Walker Wood was equally as good with 105 yards on 7 of 18 throwing, including a pair of TDs.

“You are probably getting tired of hearing this but we are not going to name a starter, maybe until the week of the first game,” Goff said.

Wood hit Markel Cotton on a 39-yard scoring pass and Severyn Foster with a 13-yarder for his touchdowns. Wood found Josh Matthews for a 4-yards for his score.

Cade Bartlett and Devonta McMahon each had TD runs of 7 and 29 yards, respectively.

“We are getting better every day,” Kadum said. “I think we have a lot of young talent on this team that is only going to get better.”

One area Goff said he wanted to see improvement was in the running game. He got that as McMahon broke out for 55 yards on five carries, including his score. Marcus McElroy had 18 yards on seven carries and went 4-for-4 on picking up first downs on short-yardage runs.

“You get into that open space and can get out there one on one and it’s fun,” McMahon said. “Getting the ball in the end zone, that’s exciting.”

Goff said he wanted to see more playmakers and Matthews came up big. He made three catches for 67 yards, showing signs of the deep game. Jalen Johnson had four grabs for 14 yards.

“We felt loose and came out focused,” Matthews said. “That is a little taste of what is coming in the fall.”

Matthews entered the NCAA transfer portal after last season but pulled his name after talking with Goff. Now he is getting the hang of the new offense.

“It is a lot more open and there are a lot of things we are going to be able to do,” Matthews said.

McNeese finished with 16 first downs and 336 total yards of offense. The kicking game has improved as C.J. Moya connected on a 42-yard field goal and was one of  three kickers to combine to make 6 of 7 extra points.
