Sweet revenge, Bucs get even for Tuesday loss

Two days after uncharacteristically blowing a big lead, the Barbe Bucs used the long ball to put the game away Thursday in a 14-2 District 3-5A win over Acadiana.

The win avenged a 6-5 Acadiana win on Tuesday. In that game, the Bucs blew a 4-0 lead.

This time around, the Bucs (26-2, 6-2) blew the game open early.

Acadiana (15-10, 4-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Hunter Sellers double to score Parker Gwyn.

Barbe stormed back with four in the bottom half of the inning on a Grant Comeaux sacrifice fly and three-run home run by Grant Trahan.

The Bucs added three in the second on an RBI double by Blake Moss and two-run homer to right by J.C. Vanek.

The barrage continued in the third with Barbe scoring seven runs. Moss hit a grand slam and Comeaux had a three-run homer to left to make the score 14-1.

Acadiana scored in the top of the fifth on a pair of Barbe errors.

Diego Corrales threw a complete game for Barbe, allowing four hits and striking out four.

“He got his slider over 15 times out of 22 and started getting his changeup over late,” Bucs head coach Glenn Cecchini said. “That’s three pitches to worry about. If you can only throw fastballs, Acadiana is going to be able to hit you; really any 5A team will be able to hit that.

“Diego was great today and gives us three really good starters with Landon Victorian and Gavin Guidry.”

Moss, Vanek and Donovan Lasalle, the top three hitters in the Barbe lineup, each reached base on their first three trips to the plate and combined to score eight runs.

Moss had a single, double and homer. He scored three times and drove in five. Vanek also had three hits and scored three runs.

“That group had some good at-bats. LaSalle took a walk (in the first inning), Vanek had a walk (in the third inning) and Moss is hitting great,” Cecchini said. “We can hit one through nine. We haven’t been hitting well lately, so we challenged the team before the game and we responded today.

“(Tuesday) we blew a 4-0 lead, something we rarely do, but today we came back and showed our championship form.”

Presley Courville had two hits and two runs for Barbe. Trahan had two hits and three RBIs.
