Spooner unleashes state’s top javelin mark

MOSS BLUFF — Since an injury early this year, South Beauregard junior javelin thrower Trinity Spooner has longed to get back to 100 percent.
Wednesday at the Sam Houston Bronco Relays, Spooner started to see light at the end of the tunnel, recording the best throw in the state this season at 144 feet, 8 inches to jump ahead of Alexandria’s Sarah Dupuy (144).
The long one came on her final throw.
“That last throw really felt like I was kind of getting back to where I was,” Spooner said. “That connection, that little bit of muscle memory is coming back. After that one I am feeling really confident.”
Her previous best of the season was a 135-10 at the first Sam Houston Bronco Relays on March 17. As a sophomore, she had one of the best throws in the United States at 152-4.
Spooner has had to learn patience while recovering from a slight labrum tear. She was the Class 3A state runner-up last season and state champion in 2019.
“I did physical therapy for a couple of months, and now I feel stronger and back better than ever,” Spooner said. “It has been challenging. Since seventh grade it has not been difficult for me to increase. It has always been really easy to catch on. Now when I have all this knowledge and I am not catching on right away it is kind of frustrating. But I am learning that patience.”
Spooner beat a pair of top-10 throwers in the state in Barbe’s Mckenzie Davis (123-3) and Sarah Davis (114-1), who finished second and third.
Barbe swept the team titles for a second consecutive week with the girls scoring 197 points, while the boys finished with 145 points. Sam Houston was the boys runner-up with 103 points, while Iowa was the girls runner-up at 90.
Washington-Marion had a pair of outstanding performers in Markel Senegal in the field and Shannon Jackson, who tied with Barbe’s Joseph Geier for top track honors.
Senegal was runner-up in the triple jump (40-4) and third in the long jump (19-7).
Jackson won the 200-meter dash (23.47) and was second in the 100 (11.58).
Geier, a sophomore, won the 1,600 (5:07.21) and ran under 10 minutes for the first time to win the 3,200 (9:58.56).
Barbe’s Ariel Williams took girls outstanding field honors with wins in the high (5-2) and long jumps (16-101/2), plus won the 200 (26.57).
Girls outstanding track honors went to LaGrange’s Jalah Bordelon. She won the 100 (12.97) and was the runner-up in the 100 (16.23) and 300 (48.63) hurdles.
