In this edition, staff writers Warren Arceneaux and Rodrick Anderson discuss the Thursday-Saturday schedule for high school baseball and softball.
What is the best softball game?
WA: Grand Lake at Merryville, today. The Panthers have won their first five District 4-1A games and can clinch at least a share of the District 4-1A title with a win. Grand Lake is 3-1 in district play and can stay alive by avenging its lone league loss, a 10-5 loss to Merryville in the district opener.
RA: Sulphur at Sam Houston, today. Sam Houston has won six consecutive games, scoring more than 13 runs a game. The Tors are looking to bounce back after suffering their first district loss to Acadiana, 14-4 on Tuesday. Sam Houston won a pair of close games over the Tors last season.
What is the most interesting baseball game?
WA: Iowa at Westlake, today. Both enter with 2-2 records in District 4-3A play after losing its last two. Each team needs at least a split in the series to avoid dropping too far behind fellow district contenders South Beauregard and St. Louis. Jennings is also in the mix with a 2-2 district record.
RA: St. Louis vs. South Beauregard, Thursday and Saturday. After starting the season 4-9, the defending Division II state champion Saints have turned things around, winning seven of their last eight games. South Beauregard has bounced back from an 0-2 district start with a pair of wins over Westlake.
Name a track and field athlete to watch.
WA: Ella Segura, St. Louis. The distance runner owns the area’s best time in the 800-meter run (2:24.17), 1,600 (5:24.05) and 3,200 (11:40.05).
RA: JaRell Joseph, Lake Charles College Prep. The junior multi-sport athlete posted a personal-best 49.2 seconds to win the 400 meter run last week at the Prairie View A&M Relays last week and leads Southwest Louisiana by more than 2 seconds. He will go up against some of the top runners in the U.S. this weekend at the Mobile Challenge of Champions meet at UMS-Wright Preparatory School in Mobile, Alabama.
