OAKDALE — A man was arrested Monday for an attempted murder charge and other charges following an altercation Saturday inside an Oakdale residence.

Matthew Vernon Coker, 48, was arrested on charges of attempted second-degree murder, failure to seek assistance and interfering with emergency communications.

Investigators believe Coker got into an altercation with a male relative that escalated into him attacking the victim inside a residence the two shared in the 900 block of Maple Street in Oakdale, according to Grant Willis, of the Oakdale Police Department.

“The altercation resulted in the victim being severely injured,” Willis said.

Coker is believed to have taken the victim’s phones to prevent him from calling for help, he said.

The victim, who is believed to be in his late to mid-60s and in poor health, was not able to contact authorities until Sunday due to the extent of his injuries, Willis said.

The victim is recovering from his injuries in the intensive care unit at an Alexandria hospital.

Authorities began searching for Coker on Sunday after learning he had left the residence on foot.

The Oakdale City Marshal’s Office and Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search.
