Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Detective Jill Feverjean was recognized this month for her selfless act of kindness during the historic flooding event last May.
On May 17, several communities in Calcasieu Parish were blindsided with a historic flood event that brought 16-18 inches of rain in a six-hour period. During that flash flood, deputies with CPSO were deployed to assist with emergency calls and set up makeshift shelters. One such shelter was at a local church where deputies were taking in stranded motorists and residents with no way to escape the area.
While assisting at the church, Feverjean took notice of a woman with no shoes and an infant on an oxygen tank in her arms. Feverjean approached the woman who then recalled her story of having to flee the rising flood waters with only minimal supplies for herself and the child.
Feverjean said the despair in the woman’s eyes and the compromised health of the young child spurred her into action.
Feverjean immediately went to a local store where she used her own money to purchase shoes for the woman and diapers and formula for the child.
Sheriff Tony Mancuso described Feverjean’s actions as above and beyond what is required of her as a deputy, and that she displayed a genuine act of kindness for those who are most vulnerable.
For her actions, Feverjean was one of 15 law enforcement officers from across the state to receive the 2022 Heart of Law Enforcement Award.
Feverjean received her award on March 8 at a ceremony and luncheon held in Baton Rouge and hosted by the Beyond the Badge non-profit organization.
This year’s event was attended by more than 200 guests, including Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser and Dukes of Hazzard star John Schneider.
