A few sit-down sessions paid dividends for Sam Houston, which snapped out of a bad spell of play in a big way, beating rival Barbe 19-1 a day after suffering a shutout loss to the Bucs in the District 3-5A opener.

The loss ended a 38-game winning streak for Barbe (22-1, 1-1), which closed last season with 16 wins and started this season by winning 22 straight.

Sam Houston (15-4, 1-1) scored 15 runs in the second inning, which featured 20 Broncos at-bats, four Barbe errors and grand slams by Andrew Glass and Luke Yuhasz. Ashton Fuselier and Austin Blankenship each had a two-run single in the inning.

Glass, a Tulane signee, had given the Broncos a 2-0 lead with a homer in the first inning.

Broncos head coach Chad Hebert said he and Glass had a one-on-one meeting in which Glass expressed disappointment with his play.

“Here’s a kid that was hitting .395, and he comes to me and says he doesn’t think he’s playing well,” Hebert said. “I told him to just relax and be himself. Today, we saw the real Andrew.”

Glass just missed another homer, hitting a long fly ball to left in the third inning. He reached base three times, scored three runs and drove in six.

Yuhasz, Fuselier and Sam Ardoin each had two hits. Ardoin started on the mound and allowed two hits while striking out five in four innings.

The Broncos committed one error, improving a defense that had struggled as of late. The Broncos had lost three of their previous four games.

“We were in a bad stretch, something every team goes through,” Hebert said. “We had a meeting and talked about what kind of team we wanted to be. Then we had players come to me and make a sacrifice, giving up their positions for the good of the team. This is one of my favorite teams. They are really intense and fun-loving; they kind of match my personality. And they are willing to make personal sacrifices for the team.”

Donovan LaSalle doubled to score Gavin Guidry with the lone Barbe run in the first inning.

“They just beat us in every phase of the game,” Barbe head coach Glenn Cecchini said. “They played a great game. It’ll be good for us, every team needs to be punched in the face. We’ll be back Saturday.”
