MOSS BLUFF — Barbe’s Gavin Guidry experienced some uncharacteristic control problems Wednesday night, but it didn’t deter him.
Guidry struck out 13 batters and led the undefeated top-ranked Bucs to a 6-0 road win over Sam Houston.
Guidry hit pair of batters to load the bases in the second inning and helped the Broncos load the bases again in the fourth with a pair of walks. But each time, Guidry got out of the two-out jam with a strikeout.
“Guidry did a good job,” Barbe head coach Glenn Cecchini said. “He didn’t have his best stuff.
“He usually commands his fastball, but he struck out 13 guys. He finds a way and that is what winners do. It is what champions do, and he is a champion.”
Guidry seemed to get stronger as the game went on, striking out the final five batters he faced.
‘Even the professionals are off sometimes,” Cecchini said. “You say off, but he threw a shutout and struck out 13. He has spoiled everyone, including the coaches. He usually doesn’t walk anybody and doesn’t hit anybody. He pitched great. He did what he had to do to win. I was proud of him.”
Sam Houston (14-4, 0-1) had its chances but left eight runners stranded, including five in scoring position.
“I think that everyone that came to the game knew that Guidry wasn’t his best, and he was still really good,” Sam Houston head coach Chad Hebert said. “We let him off the hook a couple of times.”
Sam Houston’s defensive struggles continued as they committee four errors that led to three of the Bucs’ (21-0, 1-0) runs. Sam Houston has lost three of its last four games, committing at least two errors in each loss.
“We didn’t play clean defense,” Hebert said. “You are never going to beat them when you do that, ever.
“We are in the thick of it right now. It has been this way for two or three games where we have kicked it around and thrown it around. We just have to figure it out. Like I told the guys, the Barbe game is not going to define us. They beat us last year, and we beat them last year. It is another baseball game that we have to get through.”
After two scoreless innings, Barbe scored a pair of runs in the third on an error and a single by Grant Trahan.
Barbe added two more runs on an error in the sixth and Guidry added a RBI single and Trahan hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Barbe will host the Broncos today at 6 p.m. to close out the two-game series.
