Sulphur’s Devall, Kinder’s Griffin excelling as teams start district

In this edition of the Triple Play, staff writers Warren Arceneaux and Rodrick Anderson look ahead to this week’s baseball and softball games and the last week’s track and field action.
Name a baseball player to watch.
WA: Sulphur catcher Cooper Devall had a 3 for 3 game with a home run vs. Calvary Baptist last week and a 2-RBI game versus Airline. Devall is an excellent defensive catcher and will help the Tors as they open District 3-5A play this week. He is hitting .364 on the season.
RA: Kinder’s Griffin Cooley was key to the Yellow Jackets winning 2 of 3 in a weekend series over Class 3A No. 5 Iowa. Cooley pitched a complete game in the second game of the series and earned a save in the first plus a solo home run. Kinder starts District 5-2A action this week with games against Pickering and Vinton.
Name a softball player to watch
WA: Sam Houston shortstop Brylie Fontenot is up to 10 home runs on the season and has led the Broncos to a 12-5 start to the season.
RA: Kinder pitcher/ infielder Bri Fontenot has been big for the Yellow Jackets during their 11-game win streak. Fontenot has allowed one earned run in her last three starts in the circle with 19 strikeouts and hit a trio of home runs with 9 RBI in four games last week.
What area track athlete stood out last week?
WA: Barbe’s Ariel Williams won the high jump at the Oil City Relays last week with a best of 5-8, the second-best mark in the state this season. She also helped the Bucs win the 4×100 relay and placed third in the long jump.
RA: Senior Crajaun Bennett helped lead Iowa to a second place finish at the 61st Oil City Relays last week. Bennett was second in the 100-meter dash and was part of the gold medal 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams as the Yellow Jackets were edged by Carencro 71- 69 for the team title.
