Barbe ace Halie Pappion was perfect for five innings and struck out 13 batters to lead Barbe to a 4-1 nondistrict win against Notre Dame.
Madison Chretien hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give Barbe (9-5) the lead. Chretien scored Barbe’s third run in the third inning, reaching on an error and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Breanna Moncrief. Kailey Edwards followed with a sacrifice fly to score courtesy runner Alexis Richard. Richard was running for Pappion, who doubled off the left-field wall.
Pappion retired the first 17 Notre Dame (12-2) batters before pinch hitter Emma Hensgens hit an opposite-field home run. Keleigh Spell followed with a single, but Pappion struck out the final four batters she faced to end the game.
“I was working my changeup and riseball tonight,” Pappion said. “I like the competitive part of playing good teams like we did tonight. I know my team will have my back. I trust them and it’s fun.”
It was the fourth consecutive win for the Bucs. Pappion said the team is making strides on and off the field.
“We are definitely starting to see the ball better and starting to trust each other and getting the kind of bond we had last year,” she said.
“It’s been so fun connecting with the younger girls and just have everyone coming together and learning from our losses from the beginning of the year. It’s been fun getting to know each other better and becoming a team.”
Papillon, a senior Boston College signee, said she tries to be a good influence on younger teammates.
“I just try to be positive all the time and let them know that we’ve got this no matter what happens — good or bad, win or lose. We’ve just got to have each other’s back and trust each other.”
Barbe has outscored opponents 40-6 in its winning streak.
“Halie was dialed in tonight, hitting her spots and doing what she needed to do,” Barbe head coach Candyce Carter said. “We’ve faced some great competition early on and are starting to settle down, have quality at-bats, focus on the small things and take it one game at a time.”
Barbe will host District 3-5A foe Comeaux on Thursday.
