Carver, McMain in Class 4A final

No. 1 George Washington Carver will get another shot at a state championship after routing No. 4 Huntington 94-35 in a Class 4A semifinal Wednesday at Burton Coliseum.

The Rams will face Eleanor McMain in the final at 11 a.m. Saturday for a second consecutive season. The Mustangs won the title last year, 49-48, on a Corey Chest free throw with less than a second left.

Playing a week after junior Devin Myers was shot dead in Shreveport, the Raiders led 3-0 early after a 3-pointer by Rayshun McCullar. But the Rams closed the first quarter on a 19-2 run.

Texas A&M signee Solomon Washington was almost an unstoppable force in the lane with 16 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots plus four assists and three steals. Jaylon Hicks led four Rams (28-2) in double figures with 20 points, including four 3s.

Cameron Evans led Huntington (22-6) with eight points.

No. 3 McMain will get a chance to defend its championship after weathering a late rally.

McMain (24-6) led by 21 points with 6 minutes left in the game before the Cougars cut the lead to nine twice in the final 3 minutes. Devin Lewis’ bucket off an offensive rebound shrunk McMain’s lead to 48-39 with 1:52 left.

It was a defensive battle early with McMain leading 19-12 at halftime.

McMain senior Alex Hammond led all scorers with 15 points, and Chest finished with 10.

Leland Smith led Karr with 11 points.

The defending champion Broncos (35-3) returned to the title game, using a barrage of second-quarter 3-pointers to pull away from the Lions (25-9).

Zachary shot 8 of 12 from long range in the second quarter, extending its lead from 10 points at the end of the first quarter to 23 by halftime.

Ouachita stormed back after halftime, opening the third quarter with a 10-2 run and getting as close as 11 points early in the fourth quarter, but Zachary pulled away with a 12-2 run.

Jordan Decuir scored 24 to lead Zachary. Jalen Bolden added 15, Tyler Brown scored 14 and Brandon Rogers-Hardy added 11 for the Broncos.

Sterry Leonard led Ouachita with 17 points. Phillip Bradford scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Panthers (26-6), making their first appearance in the state semifinals, took control of the game for good with a 10-1 run to open the second half.
The run stretched the Northshore lead from five points to 14. Walker (26-9) made a last charge midway through the fourth quarter, getting within five points by scoring seven in a row, but Northshore regained control by going on a 9-2 run.
James Bridges led Northshore with 25 points. Kohen Rowbatham scored 20 and Fabian Hartley added 13.
Warren Young led Walker with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Donald Butler added 11 points.
Northshore advances to face defending champion Zachary in the championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday.
