Justin Thomas drilled a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to give No. 13 Washington-Marion a 69-68 double-overtime win over Rayne Friday night in a Class 4A bi-district playoff game.
The Charging Indians advanced to play at No. 4 Huntington in the regional round. Huntington advanced with a 72-45 win over No. 29 Tioga.
W-M (14-10) gained a measure of revenge over Rayne, which was responsible for W-M’s two District 4-4A loss. The first was a forfeit, the second a two-point win last week in Rayne.
For most of the second half, Rayne (19-16) looked ready to complete the season sweep, taking a 56-44 lead early in the fourth quarter.
However, W-M turned up the pressure on defense and held the Wolves scoreless over the final 6 minutes of regulation. The Charging Indians scored 12 straight, with Tyree Brown tying the score at 56-56 with 2 minutes left. Neither team scored on its last three possessions.
Rayne again took control in the first overtime, starting with a 6-2 run to go up by four, but didn’t score over the final 2 minutes. W-M tied the score on a Thomas basket in the lane with 14 seconds left to force a second overtime.
Rayne took a 68-66 lead on a Tayshaun Colomb basket with 38 seconds left, but Thomas hit the winner from the top of the key. Rayne failed to get a shot off on its final possession.
“Thomas is one of our best 3-point shooters,” W-M head coach Robert Palmer said. “We always want him to go down low, but that was a pretty good shot.”
Palmer said his team turned the game around on the defensive end.
“We started guarding somebody and rebounding,” he said. “For the first three quarters we didn’t guard anybody, gave up layups and wide-open jump shots. We just had to man up. We could have easily folded up being down so much, but we didn’t give up. We stuck with it, did what we had to do and won.”
Elijah Netty led W-M with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
“He is always going to be there,” Palmer said. “He is always going to rebound, play defense and play smart. That’s what he’s been doing for us.”
Colomb led Rayne with 22 points. Deshaunté Cormier scored 18 and Lance Smith scored 16.
Thomas scored 19 for W-M. Kishaun Stevens and Tyree Brown added 10 each.
