No. 7 South Beauregard doesn’t plan on slowing down when they host No. 10 Grant today in the regional round of the Class 3A playoffs.
“We have to keep the intensity level up,” South Beauregard head coach Susan Johnson said. “We have been preaching a lot of energy.
“These girls just want it. They expect to make it to the top-28.”
The game will start at 6 p.m.
The Lady K’s (22-9)look to overwhelm the Cougars (27-7) with their defense.
“They are not a fast-paced team,” Johnson said. “I don’t know if they are going to be able to run with us and handle our pressure on defense.
“It is the second round, so every team gets tougher. Every game gets more competitive. I think we are prepared. We are going to do our things and make Grant make some changes.”
South Beauregard is 20-0 when it holds opponents under 50 points.
Raelyn Gunter and Trinity Spooner recently returned from injuries, allowing the Lady K’s to play even more aggressive.
“We have had our ups and down this season,” Johnson said. “Having the full team going into the playoffs was a breath of fresh air.
“It gives us a nice rotation. We are able to be more aggressive on defense and run even more. All nine can start on any given night.
“They are playing hard. We are not the most talented team, but we play so hard. We preach when you play hard good things happen. We are crashing the boards and getting the offensive rebounds. Our assists have gone up. Our offensive rebounds have gone up. Our steals have gone up. That is just all from playing hard.”
With its more methodical style of play, Grant has won 13 of its last 14 games, holding opponents under 45 points during that time. But with multiple scoring threats led by senior Dayla Simon and sophomore Emorie Fontenot, the Lady K’s will present a dilemma for the Cougars — who to guard.
“Grant is well coached. I don’t know how they are going to handle all of our weapons. We are not going to allow them to control he tempo.”
