In a season filled with many highs and lows, the Sam Houston Broncos can guarantee a postseason berth today with a win at home.
The Broncos are ranked No. 29 in the most recent Class 5A power ratings and host Comeaux at 6 p.m. today.
Sam Houston (13-14, 1-5) was 2-8 before getting hot, winning nine of 10 games to get back into playoff contention. The Broncos hit another rough patch when they opened play in District 3-5A but have righted the ship at the best time with wins over Oberlin on Saturday and New Iberia on Tuesday.
“It was a little rough,” third-year Sam Houston head coach Brandi Pryor said. “We went on a little losing streak, then in the middle of the season, we went on a seven-game winning streak.
“After that, we started to slowly fall back down. We were on the fence. When we beat Oberlin, it put us back into the playoffs. Then, after Tuesday night’s game, it gave us a good push up. If we lose, it will probably take us out of the playoffs. Right now we are sitting in a good position to stay in the playoffs.”
Pryor said the Broncos have focused on cutting down on turnovers.
“When we went on our winning streak we were shooting the ball really well,” Pryor said. “We built our confidence with that, then we kind of struggled just being able to take care of the ball.
“That is what really hurt us in a couple of the games that we have played in the last couple of weeks. Now we are back to being patient on offense and just getting the open shots that we want. We have been playing really good defense. We are causing a lot of turnovers that we are trying to turn into points off of transition. So that has been helping us as well.”
Senior guard Lucy Bellon has been the Broncos’ best scoring threat, breaking 1,000 career points and averaging more than 20 a game. Junior forward Izabella Todd has stepped up to give the Broncos a presence in the lane.
“(Bellon) is a great leader,” Pryor said. “When we are struggling, she is able to find a way to score to get our momentum back going.
“I have a junior post player who has really been big for us in district play and all season long. She is averaging double figures in points and almost double figures in rebounds which is really big for us. We need multiple people to score for us to win. If we can get multiple people scoring, rebounds down low and defensive stops, that is a game-changer for us.”
