The discovery of an unresponsive driver found in a vehicle parked near the area of Common and 7th streets Wednesday resulted in an officer-involved shooting, authorities said.
Louisiana State Police Trooper Sgt. Derek Senegal said officers with Lake Charles police discovered the man at about 4:30 a.m.
“Upon arrival, officers made contact with the subject who was later identified as 41-year-old Richard Malone of Lake Charles,” Senegal said. “During the encounter, an altercation took place between Malone and LCPD officers. Malone used the vehicle he was driving and struck at least one marked LCPD vehicle. At some time during the altercation, an LCPD officer fired his weapon striking Malone in the upper left arm.”
Senegal said a pursuit ensued southbound on Common Street before Malone lost control of his vehicle and crashed near the intersection of Common and Scott streets.
Malone was transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for treatment. No one else was injured.
Louisiana State Police is the lead investigating agency for the officer-involved shooting. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Forensic Investigative Unit responded to the scene and is assisting with the investigation.
This is an active investigation and further information will be released when it becomes available.
